Most aging adults don’t get enough physical activity. Exercise, though, can improve health impairments and prevent some diseases. It can also improve mood and emotional well being. The keys, though, to a sensible senior workout are to take it slowly and keep it up. Older people need to find a realistic mild to moderate enjoyable program.

Let me give you 8 important reasons why You should work out.

1. Sleeping Aid for Seniors

Because exercise effects the body is so many positive ways, it is clearly the most natural option for helping address sleep related issues. Regular exercise will first of all help tire the body physically, ensuring a natural form of fatigue that the body will address with a
need to get appropriate rest.

2. Strength Training = Strong Bones

A critical aspect of aging is the general weakening of both muscle tissue and our bones themselves. One of the surest ways to reduce the stress on our weakening bones is to increase our muscles mass through strength training. Strength training has repeatedly been shown to be a safe and effective method of reversing muscle loss in the elderly

3. Strong Heart

People who exercise vigorously and often will reduce the risk of heart disease the greatest, but studies also show that any exercise can be beneficial. Studies have found that moderate exercise is also beneficial for those people with existing heart disease.

4. Arthritis Help

Arthritis is defined as the inflammation of a joint, but it can certainly seem more painful than that. It can cause searing pain that leaves the body feeling weak for days. As people age, arthritis tends to develop from the extended every day uses of the body.

Exercise, though, can assist with arthritis by strengthening the muscles near the joint which helps reduce joint stress. While exercise is necessary for everyone, it is essential for those with arthritis

5. 58% lower risk for Type 2 diabetes

A study reported a 58% lower risk for Type 2 diabetes in adults who exercise for as little as 2.5 hours a week, even if the exercise was of a moderate level.

People with diabetes are at high risk for heart disease, so the protective effects of aerobic exercise on the heart are very important for people with Type 2 diabetes. Initial indications are that strength training to increase muscle mass and reduce patient fat is also helpful for people with diabetes.

6. Increased Overall Fitness

Being physically active appears to stimulate immune cells that target many viruses and infections. Though exercise appears to stimulate such cells, that stimulation appears to last only a few hours. However, regular exercise appears to lower the overall risk of being susceptible to the flu, colds, and other viruses.

7. Increased Stamina and Slowing the Aging clock

Physical fitness allows the body to perform to its full capacity. Fitness helps us appear, feel, and act to our full potential. Exercise is essentially the capability to complete everyday responsibilities energetically and actively, with energy remaining at the end of the day for appreciation of other activities.

8. No Brain Drain

How many times do you hear yourself or other seniors say, "Sorry, I'm just having another senior moment?” Many seniors are making exercise more of a habit so their sharp and educated minds don’t suffer. Studies across the country are showing that seniors who exercise their bodies have the least trouble exercising their minds

There are many different types of bicycles available on the market today, the comfort bicycle, which is used by many recreational bike riders, a trail bike or light duty mountain bike, cruiser bikes, recumbent bikes and heavy duty mountain bikes. No matter which type of bike, or biking interests you biking is a great way to increased stamina, improved cardiovascular strength and all around better fitness.

Recumbent bikes have become very popular for the middle aged and older riders. On a recumbent bike you have a very comfortable seat that you can lean back in, quite like sitting in your favorite reclining chair. Your butt is very comfortably cushioned. Your feet are out in front of you, quite like when you're driving your car. Recumbent bikes are the fastest type of bicycle.

One reason is that with your legs extended forward and pedaling in front of you, you are able to move much more weight with much less effort than on a conventional bike where your legs are underneath of you. Beginning recumbent riders will tell you it takes a while to develop what are called "recumbent muscles" but once you do you'll never go back to an ordinary bicycle.

Mountain biking is a popular activity that is enjoyed by a wide age range of people. Heavy duty mountain bikes can be quite costly, so it may be best to go to talk to a mountain biking organization about bike rental. You may only decide you need a light duty mountain bike which would also be good for regular riding. Not all mountain biking trails are killers and for experts only - they had to start somewhere too! Mountain biking trails are rated somewhat like ski trails, the easiest is green, an intermediate is blue and difficult trails are pink. Go slowly, mountain biking can be hard on the joints, and you'll need to learn how to handle the bike to minimize chance of injury.

Whichever type of bicycle you choose, just do it! Biking is a great way to achieve an aerobic work out and burn calories at the same time. The best part is that anyone can ride a bike and it's a great family recreation to be enjoyed together.

Doing weight lifting exercises puts pressure on your bones which helps they to grow stronger.

Other people who might want to do weight lifting exercises are those who want to have better definition in their muscles, or people who have sagging skin. Lifting weights will improve the overall look of your body by toning and tightening it up. Using light weights can still be effective for this, as long as you can feel some burn while you are working out. If you desire to use heavier weights there is no need for women to be afraid of becoming manly looking. It takes a long time and a lot of weights to get the look that most female body builders possess. Studies have shown that weight bearing exercise is just as beneficial to the heart as cardiovascular exercises. Cardio exercise help you lose weight, lower your chance of heart attack, lower blood pressure, improve your mood and lower stress levels. Cardio exercise should be done about five times per week for maximum results. If you can’t do cardio five times per week, you should still try to fit it in three times per week as this will still benefit you greatly. You should chose a type of exercise that you enjoy, since if you chose something you find boring, chances are you won’t stick with it. Good ideas for cardio exercises include biking, walking, jogging, playing tennis, playing basketball, skating, inline skating, swimming, skiing and team sports. You can also use cardio as a type of functional exercise. This means instead of driving to the grocery store, try walking instead. This way you aren’t going out of you’re way to fit in exercise, but you are still reaping the benefits. You should try to do cardio for at least half an hour, and try to make sure you raise your heart rate a little.

Before engaging in any type of exercise, you should get a complete physical examination to make sure you aren’t suffering from heart disease or some other type of illness. After your doctor gives you the ok to start exercising, start out slow and work your way up. And remember, exercise should be fun and enjoyable.

When it comes to men health and fitness, America as a country is getting further and further behind the rest of the industrialized world. More men in the United States are overweight than any other country in the world, and it's time we did something about it. Fortunately, there are a ton of options when it comes to losing weight. For example, there are plenty of gyms in cities across America. If you're not a fan of getting all sweaty and gross in front of strangers, you can always order your own home gym or get a treadmill. Nowadays, you can even watch television programs and get fit! There are entire channels devoted only to giving you a trim figure.

If you want to learn more about men health and fitness, you could always start subscribing to a men's magazine. In addition to having in depth consumer reports on various electronics and doodads, they also have health and wellness sections. From telling you the best times of the day to go running if you're looking to increase your metabolism to showing you how to shape your triceps, men's magazines have just about everything you could hope for.

If you'd like a more engaging kind of activity, you could hop online and check out some of the men health and fitness forums that are everywhere. These forums allow you to discuss men's health issues in an anonymous fashion without the embarrassment of talking face to face with your primary care physician. They also can act as support groups, with everyone encouraging one another to stay on track in terms of diet and exercise. The only thing to remember when you're dealing with forums, however, is that you can never be sure of who you're talking to. Take all of the advice you get on the forums with a grain of salt, because the people may or may not know what they're talking about.

Health Fitness Guide – Thoughts, The Foundation For All Health And Fitness Achievement

"Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve" - W. Clement Stone

Like any learned skill, there are certain basics that must be mastered first. The very bedrock upon which all health and fitness achievement rests are thoughts. Everything man-made in the world or any action you've taken in the past all started with a thought. There is not one man-made object or goal that didn't start as a thought in someone's head that was then made into reality. Your toaster, your TV, your automobile, your desire for better health.

A single thought ultimately transformed into physical reality.

In order to achieve any health or fitness goal you must start with this basic concept; thoughts are things. Thoughts are the foundation upon which you build the framework for attainment of your goal. Every thought has a physical manifestation in our bodies; every thought produces physical substances called neuro-transmitting enzymes that have instant effects on how we feel and who we are at the cellular level.

Don't believe me? Think of biting into a big, juicy lemon or think about fingernails slowly running down a chalk board and tell me you didn't have an immediate, physical response.

Or how about a thought that changed the world?

Every day, thousands of times a day, all over the world people fly from destination to destination. It's amazing that a person can step into a device that lifts them off the ground and flies through the air at great speed sometimes over great distances safely carrying them to their destination in a matter of minutes or hours! Only a bit over a hundred years ago that would have been considered impossible or a miracle. Yet it happens every day today and it started with a thought in someone's head that man could fly. On December 17th, 1903 the thought that man had had for generations to fly, became reality.

That is the power of thoughts!

If you can have that kind of immediate response from such a simple thought, just imagine what you can accomplish with a focused, burning desire backed by faith and persistence!

Life isn't fair or normal, there's just life. But that should be a comforting thought. If life were fair all things would be equal and all people would be equal. The logical conclusion is that there could be no social movement up or down, no bettering of yourself nor worsening, no getting healthier, just stagnation. Because life isn't fair it means you have the ability to control whether you improve your life or make it worse but at least you have the ability to make change.

What about external influences which you have no control over? Say your significant other is killed in a car accident or you become paraplegic in a skiing accident. The list could go on and on. But there is one thing you have total control over.

Viktor E. Frankl, a concentration camp survivor, put it best in his book "Man's Search for Meaning,"

"The one thing you can't take away from me is the way I choose to respond to what you do to me. The last of one's freedoms is to choose ones attitudes in any given circumstance."

The only absolute freedom you have is choosing how you react to life. And how you choose starts with a thought.

Who you are right now is the sum total of what you've thought about up to this moment. If you're not satisfied with who you are right now, the good news is who you will be from now on is entirely up to you. Change your thoughts and you can start changing yourself. If you want to lose weight or be more fit, it all starts with a thought.

Everything You Need to Know to Stay Healthy

Health and fitness go together, just like milk and cookie, cake and tea, coffee and cream. They make a great team - one that can help us live a longer and better life. Thus, it is essential that we find out as much as we can about how to stay healthy and fit, a task that many people should not but take for granted.

These days, you can notice a number of negative changes in the world we live in. The air isn't is as clean and clear as it once was centuries ago, the water contaminated in many parts of the globe, the forests destroyed and nearly bare. Our way of living isn't as pure as we need it to be, and technological advancements, many though they may be, cannot save us from the consequences of our own actions. As the earth continues to deteriorate, so do the threats to our health and fitness keep on growing. It is up to us to do something about it, and it is our responsibility to ensure the well being not only of our own selves but also that of future generations.

And so we should pay attention and patronize activities that promote health and fitness. When it comes to staying healthy and fit, one of the most common concepts involved is proper diet. The number of obesity cases continue to rise every year, particularly in North America, and contrary to what products marketed as weight loss solutions claim, pills or supplements cannot put an end to obesity and other weight-related problems. Instead of relying on advertising baloney, we should create a plan made of tried and tested methods and do everything we can to achieve our goals.

One of the best ways to go about this is to make a personalized menu. Every human anatomy is different; your body's needs are different from mine. Consulting a nutritionist is a good idea; he or she can tell us which foods to avoid (excessive eating of oily and fatty foods is always a no-no) and which to stock up on (good carbs, lean protein, fruits and vegetables, and grains, to name a few). Commitment is necessary, as well as patience; it can take weeks before our bodies adjust.

Proper diet alone cannot assure our health and fitness. We also need regular exercise. There are different kinds of exercise, but one type of training that is considered all-encompassing by health experts is cardiovascular training. Exercises that fall under this category can be used not only to lose weight but also to build muscles, in addition to its primary purpose of strengthening one's cardiovascular functions. With or without exercise equipment, we can perform cardiovascular training exercises. Simple activities and sports such as walking, sprinting, jogging, running, cycling or biking, swimming, and many others are common forms of cardiovascular training.

Some people tend to overdo things. This is why many of us feel incredibly tired at the end of the day. This is where adequate rest and sleep enter the picture. It is equally important that, while we stay active, we also give our body ample time to recharge and rejuvenate. This way, we can enjoy all our activities better, stay focused for longer periods of time, and feel young and vibrant always. Aside from this, we should also try to maintain a sunny disposition, something that seems so simple yet can do so much. By being happy, we can fight off stress - a known cause of a number of diseases and disorders - and live life beautifully.
